LLLT's main purpose is to magnetically stimulate cells and, in some cases, eradicate cells (this depends on wavelength and power density). Due to the low power density and frequency of low level lasers, the physiological effects are biochemical in nature. Thus, low level lasers or cold beam lasers (5mW per beam) cannot generate heat and will not damage cells.

Three distinct effects are known to occur when using LLLT:

  1. Cellular proliferation: Growth factor response within cells and tissue results in increased ATP energy and protein synthesis, which improves cell regenerative functions;
  2. Alleviation of pain: Pain relief gradually occurs as a result of natural endorphins produced by the body; reduces swelling and inflammation by blocking pain receptors;
  3. Stronger immune system: Strengthens the immune system by increasing levels of lymphocyte activity and through a newly researched mechanism called photomodulation of blood.

Laser light uses the scientific principle of photobiotherapy. This process occurs when cells absorb light. Laser light penetrates deep into the tissues of the skin, stimulating the dynamics of healthy cells: micro-circulation of blood supply, cell metabolism and protein synthesis.

Many long-term clinical research programs have shown that LLL photo bio-stimulation provides numerous benefits for the skin and hair. Cell research suggests that laser works by three mechanisms:

  1. Energization – Transforms laser energy (photon ions) into cellular energy. Laser light increases the energy available to cells so they absorb nutrients faster and eliminate waste products more readily by increasing ATP, RNA and DNA synthesis rates.
  2. Circulation – Increases arterial, vein and lymph micro-circulation through vasodilatation. Microscopic studies have shown that laser light energy increases stimulatory and regulatory mechanisms of the skin cellular metabolism and increases the circulation and oxygenation of the skin and scalp tissues. The light helps bring more essential minerals and nutrients to the areas where the laser energy is applied. As a result of this increased blood flow, toxins and cellular waste, including harmful dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are more quickly removed. Laser energy also removes calcification and blockages around cells and increases cell renewal and regenerative capacities.
  3. Vibration – Brings cells into harmonious vibration with photon energy, which is commonly referred to as photomodulation. The soft tissue, fluids and cells in our bodies actually vibrate. They do this within a frequency range similar to that of a low level laser, the wavelength of a red-light laser. When its vibrations become irregular or out-of-step, they can be brought back into "synchronization" by being irradiated with the laser.

The treatment requires the application of low level lasers (coherent and non-coherent) at a specific wavelength, which is exposed to body tissue areas in order to stimulate the production of certain nutrients, chemicals and regenerative physiological functions.

When cells are exposed to light energy, they respond through a process called photomodulation. The effect of photobiostimulation on animal and human cells is a chain of chemical reactions set in motion in order to produce nutrients and energy. The resulting photochemical reaction produces an increase in cellular metabolism, thereby accelerating cell repair and stimulating the immune, lymphatic and vascular systems. The final result, observed in clinical trials, is a noticeable reduction in pain, inflammation, edema, reduced healing time, and skin and hair regeneration.

The laser accelerates cellular proliferation and regenerative growth, thereby stimulating faster fibroblast development of damaged tissue and increasing metabolic activity, which creates higher outputs of specific enzymes and greater oxygenation of blood cells. Positive reactions are triggered by the laser light. Laser light speeds up nerve function in damaged tissue, which enhances muscle performance and optimizes functioning. LLLT increases cell metabolism, causing accelerated ATP production, protein synthesis, DNA and RNA formation, and many positive markers.

LLLT also improves scalp conditions such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and itchy scalp, which is due to the side-effects of anti-inflammatory medication. LLLT also normalizes the sebum produced in skin and scalp tissue.

Within 3 to 6 weeks, some users may experience increased hair shedding. This is a good indication and means the LLLT is effective. The shedding occurs because hair rejuvenation activates the "anagen" hair follicle's growth phase. During the anagen phase, hair cells develop rapidly, producing the hair shaft within the follicle. The length of the anagen phase determines the maximum length of the hair's life; this phase may range from 1,000 days to 3-6 years. The catagen cycle of the hair is the transitional or regressive phase. During this phase, the hair follicle shrinks and starts to die. The telogen phase is the final cycle; the follicle grows again, gradually forcing out the old hair. At any one time, about 85% of hair is in the growth phase and about 15% is in the hair loss stage of the cycle. After resting, as long as the follicle has not been damaged or obstructed, the follicle becomes active again, growing a new hair shaft. Within 60-90 days, significant reduction of hair loss, thickness and pigment changes of existing hair can be seen. Within 3-6 months, the hair becomes noticeably thicker and the scalp becomes significantly fuller. After 16-18 months of regular treatments, maximum improvement is achieved in the anagen growth phase.

Using LLLT for hair rejuvenation is a lifetime commitment because our bodies constantly produce excessive enzyme and DHT levels, unless it is treated. Once the objectives have been achieved, the user must continue treatments 1 time per week to maintain results in order to slow down and/or stop any further hair loss.
